Meet our host Andrew Hlupo more popularly known as Drew The MC who is an upcoming musician, a rapper to be specific. Started off as Drew, part of the OvaDose Boys collective at St Ignatius College during his high school years. The crew of 4 went and won the 2013 ZimHipHop Award for the Best High School Act, setting a tone for the new generation of rap music.
In 2015 Andrew moved to Cape Town to pursue his studies, and 2017 marked the third year the young artist was away from music. However late 2017, Andrew, now dubbed Drew The MC, marked his return with “My Season” a single off his debut solo album “The Guardian Of The Garden” which gained recognition in and around the University of Cape Town.
2018 saw the release of the debut album, with features from Malachi, Hanna, Jabba and The Commemorative, with the whole project executively produced by Beatsmith. Drew continued by releasing music videos to his material, and performed at club events. Songs like “CHEESE” and “Guardian” caught the attention of those in love with the genre.
In 2019 Drew collaborated with Hajila movement and Pharoah the Oldest to host hip hop shows showcasing the hiphop talent and culture in Cape Town, and the initiative continues to grow and gain acclaim. Later on in the year, the artist saw himself expanding his horizon, particularly by featuring on Hillzy’s hit single “Chikuru Kufema” and Hanna’s “Nigists”, both singles affording him performances at the Dj Stavo and Friends concert and the Ivyson Tour Zimbabwe show respectively.
In 2020 Drew released “Matemadanda”, along with 3 other singles for cultural impact. Matemadanda serves as the first single from his much anticipated sophomore album VAGABOND, set for near future release.
