“My most exciting costume moment in Cook Off is when Anesu comes alive to herself on that first date!” __________
Meet our Spotlight FoLaKè, an exciting voice in Zimbabwe film, describes costume design as “one of the most understated mechanisms in film in Zimbabwe”. She describes it as “the most powerful dimension that controls the way the audience experiences the particulars of characters”. ________
Costumes breathe life into the story. Actors get to walk in the shoes of the characters they play, which binds actor and character together emotionally. The costume designer creates magic to stimulate our visual impressions: What age should Anesu be? What is Prince’s social status? How can Milly-Ann’s dramatic role be communicated? _______
“To style the costumes, I had to understand the director’s vision for the narrative. What was the plot? My most exciting costume moment in the movie is when Anesu comes alive to herself on that first date!”
________
Her love for fashion began in Harare where FoLaKè was born and raised. She established the clothing label Lilac Couture together with her mum. When the opportunity came to move from designing contemporary fashion for retail to the world of costume design she used her creative palette to carefully absorb the script and the director’s vision to craft costume designs to symbolise the qualities of the characters with the plot.
_________
Now FoLaKè is emerging from behind the scenes to impress her own footprint, to unearth African excellence and shine a spotlight on the unique Zimbabwean media and creative experience. FoLaKè is an energised, charismatic voice in the Zimbabwean artistic space. She combines her passion and experience with the desire to communicate freedom in the expression of ideas and realized truths.
