The Cookoff Cast: Sébastien Lallemand

Meet our Spotlight Sébastien Lallemand, Director of Photography of the award-winning Zimbabwean film @CookOffZim, coming to Netflix on 1 June.

Born in Liège in Belgium in 1981, Sébastien moved to Rwanda with his family at the age of two, later moving to Burundi where he lived for 12 years. Due to the impact of armed conflicts in the region, he moved to Zimbabwe in 1996 – he first attended Speciss Study Centre to learn English and then went on to finish his schooling at St George’s College in Harare.

Passionate about photography and driven to tell stories through the lens of a camera, Sébastien studied at AFDA Film School in Cape Town where he graduated with a BA (Honours) degree in Cinematography.

In 2007 he won “Best Upcoming Cinematographer” at the Multichoice VUKA! awards in Johannesburg for his work on ‘Perception’, a commercial shot on 35mm film for the Saarjiie Baartman Centre for Women and Children.

After working on various documentaries, music videos, other short films and commercials, Sébastien joined the camera team of Cook In Africa Film Ltd. He worked on the television series ‘The Long Miles Coffee Project’ in Burundi and on season one of the multi-award-winning M-Net television show ‘The Ultimate Braai Master’. Back in Zimbabwe, he started collaborating with his friend Tomas Lutuli Brickhill – director of @CookOffZim – on various projects including seasons two and three of the popular TV show @Battle of the Chefs Harare.

Sébastien and Tomas founded Mufambanidzo Film Company in 2016 – @Cook Off is their first feature film, which has screened at many film festivals around the world, including Rotterdam, Seattle and the Pan-African Film Festival in Los Angeles.
