Meet our Host Uma-Thandeka Muhwati, (simply known as Uma) is a Poet, Content Creator, Blogger and Mental Health Activist. Currently in Johannesburg, South Africa she runs the poetry page @unleashedbyuma.
“I started writing 3 years ago, in 2017 and in 2020 opened my poetry page on Instagram. I’ve always had a love for words and the deep meaning in everyday words, how easily they come together and give meaning to the things around us but also things beyond us for which words, are the mediator.”
“Emotions are an art, I write out my emotions, I am an artist. I write  poems of love, pain and hurt, healing , growth, empowerment  and mental health. In every piece, I pour my heart out. My poetry helps me cope with my emotions and I want to use the page @unleashedbyuma to reach a tribe of souls like me and bring healing, growth,  love and piece to them. “I have worked with poets from around the world (India and USA), collaborating on pieces, networking and sharing ideas. My work has been featured by over 10 top Poetry pages such as @apoeticview , @africanspiritualitypoetry , @bleedingsoulpoetry , @poetizer_official e.t.c. My biggest achievement still stands as the feature by Instagram’s Top Poetry Feature page @bymepoetry. This opened so many opportunities and I’m currently working with a number of curators to publish my work in anthologies and magazine articles.”
“As a newbie and an independent artist, I did not have any previous poetry knowledge or education, however, I managed to self-educate using platforms such as YouTube and Pinterest, this helped me shape my art and become a better writer. The main challenge, faced not only by me as an individual, but  by  most writers and poets alike is the lack of funding, networking workshops and a set platform or board that helps creatives reach their full potential. ”
“Looking to the future, I will be self-publishing an anthology within the next 12 months. I also look forward to starting workshops  that’ll help young writers promote and monetize their art on social media platforms.
